Painting a Restaurant - Distressing Walls

Here are the finished shots of the restaurant I have been working on in the center of our city, Foligno, Italy.

Everyone was thrilled with the the final look, rustic, distressed, aged walls and two smooth plum colored back walls, which gave a nice accent.

It was fun to to beat up the walls and have the freedom to make mistakes, the hard part was not being consistent.  I added stucco in patches, then hand painted the stucco with watercolors, this gave the wall a faded look.  I mixed taupe colored paint and brushed it on irregularly.  Then I went over the wall with a big wet empty brush.  Then I crapped the wet wall with a stucco spatula.  I put touches of aqua blue and grey lavender, this made the walls glow with sporadic color.

I love the contrast of the crystal chandelier and distressed walls.

When you find yourself in Foligno, Italy come for a meal, the environment is gorgeous, the people are easy going  and the food is spectacular.  It is created with flavors from the past, made by hand in a rustic country style always natural and fresh and prepared with love, care and attention to detail.  You can eat outside and watch the people hanging out and moving through the piazza and then look up to the huge church duomo rising above.

  1. Beautiful work, Natalie! I would love to sample the food there. Did you do that large green cabinet too? That is a great piece of storage.

  2. I didn't do the large "green" cabinet. It is actually a deep grey with a hint of green and the lighting changed the look. The piece is gorgeous I think it came from Germany, they left it aged and distressed just as it is.
